The Monroe County Community School Corporation has selected a new principal to lead Bloomington High School North.
The School Board approved the hire at its meeting last night.
Michelle Brittain-Watts comes from Indianapolis where she worked 16 years with Indianapolis Public Schools. In her time, she served in a number of administrative roles including special education coordinator, curriculum director and assistant athletic director. Most recently she was the principal of Tindley High School.
She says in transitioning to a smaller community, she hopes to become more aware of Bloomington’s rich culture.
"That will be my initial first steps is to get involved with that, figure out how I can fit in there," says Brittain-Watts. "How we can address the needs of the community, and just continue to support the academic success that the students have had thus far."
The School Board voted unanimously to approve Brittain-Watts’ appointment. It takes effect April 1 st. The position calls for a two-year contract with an annual salary of $120,000 dollars.
Brittain-Watts says she’s already begun evaluating the needs of the schools and setting goals for improvement.
“Climate and culture type things, that’s one of my areas of strength so we’ll be looking at how we can enhance those particular areas,” says Brittain-Watts.
Last November, MCCSC officials announced Michael Akers would step down as principal of BHSN.
Brittain-Watts will take over for the corporation’s Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Andrea Mobley who is currently serving as the school’s interim principal.
