Indiana University Student Government will give out free helmets later this month to promote scooter safety.

Scooter Safety Week will kick off March 25, and IUSG will partner with electric scooter companies to give the helmets away.

Vice President of Administration for IU Student Government Maggie Hopkins says the push is all about keeping students safe.

"The lack of helmets we've been seeing on campus, coupled with the many accidents that have happened with scooter riders," Hopkins says. "So just to make sure that students are being safe and trying to do our part as a student government."

Hopkins says they plan to give away between 40 and 200 helmets.

Electric scooter companies Bird and Lime dropped hundreds of scooters in Bloomington last year, giving the city little to no warning  about their arrival.

Bird pulled their scooters from Bloomington for the winter, and a Bird representative says their return is dependent on weather.
