The Monroe County Waste Management District’s board has postponed making a decision on whether to agree to Republic Service’s new contract terms .
Board members discussed in a meeting today the new terms. Republic wants the waste management district to pay it $26.40 per ton of recyclables collected and gave board members until Sept. 1 to agree.
Board members say the deadline set by Republic services was premature, and doesn’t follow the current contract’s timeline.
Julie Thomas is a member of the district board. She says the district needs to evaluate the most financially responsible path to follow before taking action.
“It’s a change from a revenue situation to an expense, and that adds up,” she says.
The board will meet again Sept. 12 to vote on whether to seek cost estimates from other businesses to provide the recycling service.
