Bartholomew County Considers Rebuilding Highway Garage

The Bartholomew County Commission president is recommending the city rebuild the county's highway garage.

Bartholomew County officials are moving forward with plans to renovate or rebuild the State Street Annex Building.

County Commission President Carl Lienhoop says the annex building is the first priority, but the garage is in the same disrepair.

"We think that our current building is just probably too far gone to make it economically feasible to rehabilitate or remodel," Lienhoop said.

The county estimates renovations could cost between $4 million and $5 million. Lienhoop says county garage repairs could increase that total by 20 percent or 25 percent.

Bartholomew County Highway Department Engineer Danny Hollander says the garage building is 60 years old.

"We can't use front doors anymore because the snow plows around truck, with the big truck, we can't make that turn, so we gotta back in and out," Hollander said.

The county also doesn't have space at the building to keep its sand and salt mixture indoors so it's kept outside in violation of Indiana Department of Environmental Management requirements.

The county does not have a timeline for the renovation projects.
