Tornadoes and severe weather this season carry potential for major property damage with wind and hail storms the most common causes of damage. State Farm Spokesperson Missy Dundov says Indiana is ranks sixth in the nation for states with the most wind and hail damage in 2013 and State Farm filed 15,000 claims from Hoosiers last year.
Dundov says making even small preparations for severe weather actually makes a difference.
"It's just really important as people head into the storm season they have those first aid kits, the flashlights, all of that type of thing," Dundov said. "You never thing the storm is going to happen to you."
Dundov says hail-resistant roofing and cutting down dying trees are two other preventative steps, as well as removing items around property that might be easily thrown around in a storm and cause greater damage.
The total damage nationwide cost customers $3 billion last year.
