Indiana's Unemployment Rate Falls Below 6 Percent

Indiana's unemployment rate is below 6 percent for the first time in nearly six years as the private sector continues to add jobs in 2014.

The state's unemployment rate dropped 2 percent in the last year, falling to 5.9 percent last month. That's the third largest drop in the country over the last 12 months.

The unemployment rate is also at its lowest since July of 2008.

The private sector added 3,200  jobs in March, pushing the 2014 job creation totals above 25,000.

Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Scott Sanders calls the numbers "remarkable" and notes unemployment claims last month were at their lowest level since before the recession.

The job creation gains last month were notably boosted by the Leisure and Hospitality sector, likely aided by college basketball tournaments in Indianapolis and Evansville.
