Red Cross Opens Shelter; Travel Warnings Still In Effect

The American Red Cross has opened a warming shelter at Bloomington High School North. Monroe County Emergency Director Jim Comerford stated in a press release that due to extended power outages, the shelter will be open as long as the need exists. They are asking residents to bring their own towels, blankets and pillows.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until midnight due to drifting and blowing snow. The wind chill warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Wind chill readings are expected to drop to 40 below zero due to bitter temperatures and high winds.

Many counties are still under travel warnings. The status prohibits travel to emergency personnel only. County travel status from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security may be found here.

Duke Energy is reporting 2,300 residents are without power... the most outages are in Vigo County.

Many closings are being reported to the WFIU/WTIU newsroom including City of Bloomington offices and services and IU Bloomington on Tuesday. Keep up to date on area delays and closings reported to WFIU and WTIU as well as county weather alerts here.
