U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Indiana, has lost his bid to become the next House majority whip.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was defeated in a primary earlier this month, essentially forcing him out of the position.
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was elected today to replace Cantor, leaving his position open. But Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., not Stutzman was chosen as his replacement.
Stutzman told media outlets before today that he had 50 votes. A total of 117 votes were needed to win.
Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., was also vying for the position.
