Sarah Perfetti and Abby Henkel plan to have a ceremony in August to celebrate their commitment to one another. But after reading news of the judge's ruling today, the two left work to get a marriage license at the Monroe County clerk's office.
Both were born and raised in Indiana, but questioned the possibility of a future together as a same-sex couple in the state.
"I mean you can only go on for so long with your home not recognizing your love," Henkel said. "We love Indiana, I mean we want to be here forever, but it was wearing us down thinking do we have to move one day to adopt kids the way we wanted to do everything we want. But now it's like no, we're getting there."
Reverend Mary Ann Macklin arrived at the clerk's office shortly after hearing the news to marry couples, and pronounced Abby and Sarah spouses. Macklin says today was a professional victory to marry a couple that could not, but says it's also a personal victory.
"It's important for my partner Deborah and me," Macklin said. "Because we've been together 25 years, and I didn't think it was going to happen here in my home."
The Attorney General's office said in a statement they will appeal the ruling.
