In September, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Indianapolis International Airport seized 27 gallons of a date rape chemical Gamma-Butyrolactone, or GBL, according to U.S. CBP authorities.
The amount of GBL seized was worth about $35,000. The shipments had misleading invoice descriptions in order to disguise the substance and were seized during normal operations.
The shipments came from outside of the U.S. and officials say a majority came from China.
When consumed, GBL is converted by the body to GHB, rendering the person taking it highly intoxicated. GHB is often considered a date rape drug.
