A farmer in Southern Indiana has the go-ahead to build a 4,000-hog facility.
The Jackson County Board of Zoning Appeals has unanimously approved the confined feeding operation proposed by farmer Kyle Broshears.
Dozens came to protest the hearing that went on until almost two in the morning Wednesday, citing health and property value concerns.
"I think the board members are well intentioned, we feel like not informed enough. They are good people but we think they made the wrong decision. We are considering our options but we don't know what those are at this point," says Gary McDonald, a member of a group of concerned residents, adding that could include legal options.
But Broshears says the confined feeding operation would not be built anywhere in Crothersville city limits.
"I felt like it was justified, I felt like it was warranted," Broshears says. "I'll be the first to say that there are good locations for these buildings and there are bad locations for them."
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management still has to approve Broshears' proposal before he can move forward to build the facility.
