WellPoint Inc. has officially changed its name to Anthem.
The Indianapolis-based insurance company began trading this morning as Anthem under the ticker symbol "ANTM" on the New York Stock Exchange.
The company originally announced its plans to change its name in August because most of its products, which are largely health insurance plans, are under the brand Anthem.
Chief Executive Officer Joe Swedish says Anthem is the name and image "people know us by best."
According to the Wall Street Journal, the name change was also prompted in part by the federal health care exchange. Because the company is selling more directly to customers, company officials thought it was necessary to simplify their brand.
