BMV Commissioner Responds To Report On Overcharges

Commissioner of the Indiana BMV Kent Abernathy is making plans for fixes and another round of refunds after a recent report detailed serious problems within the agency.

Abernathy says the agency found Hoosiers were overcharged on possibly 16 fees.

The exact fees and the scope of the problem won't be known until the end of June at the earliest. The agency also found people underpaid on possibly 10 separate fees.

"It was a mistake, it was something that happened. It was something that was unintentional but it did happen. We need to, to the degree possible, make right to those people that were overcharged," Abernathy says.

The independent report revealed the BMV was collecting too many different fees for different groups – fees that were often vague – and recommended the legislature fix it as soon as possible.

The report also raised questions about software the agency uses to set prices and collect money from Indiana residents, suggesting it was time for an upgrade in order to avoid errors with future bills.

The commissioner says he's working with state lawmakers to begin the fixes.

"Now we'll sit down, we'll evaluate the information that was provided and we'll continue to make improvements," Abernathy says.
