Electrical Workers Union Reaches Tentative Agreement With GE

William Fairbairn, president of Local 2249 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, says the union has reached a tentative agreement with General Electric regarding wages and benefits for workers at the Bloomington plant.

Fairbairn is not able to disclose the terms of the agreement, but he says it will likely be finalized.

"From the details that I've heard so far, it sounds like something that we're definitely going to want to accept," Fairbairn says. "I don't see any issues with it, but I have not personally looked at it. It has not been in my hands, so I still want to refrain from getting too excited about it."

Nationally, the union has asked for higher wages, plant closing benefits and special early retirement options. In 2013, 160 positions were shed from the Bloomington plant, sparking a debate over the severance benefits union workers were owed under their contract at the time.

This year, local members have asked for stronger plant closing benefits.

Fairbairn says pending discussions between union delegates in New York this week and agreement of local members, both the national and local agreements will be signed on June 30.
