Nashville Votes To Approve First-Ever Tax Abatement

The Indianapolis company RealAmerica will soon build a senior housing development under Nashville's first and only tax abatement status - something the town manager says is a sign of economic development.

Nashville's town manager Scott Rudd says Brown County is the most senior county in the state, so affordable senior housing is in high demand.

"This is a great first step in hopefully many more steps to come that will encourage additional investment," Rudd says.

RealAmerica plans to build the senior housing on a sliding payscale which is something RealAmerica Vice President of Development Jeff Ryan says serves a necessary role in the community.

"The seniors in the area, there are plenty of low-income and they can't stay in their homes," Ryan says. "They don't want to maintain them anymore or with the hills around here they just can't move or get to their houses on the dirt roads."

Big Woods Brewing Company is also in the process of applying for a tax increment financing designation, another first for Nashville.
