Tours Give Families Peek Into The Mystery At Mt. Baldy

For the first time in nearly two years, a popular dune along Indiana's National Lakeshore is open to the public for tours.

Mt. Baldy closed in 2013 after the dune collapsed and swallowed a 6-year-old boy.

The boy survived – but scientists are still trying to figure out how it all happened.

Special tours are giving families an up-close look at the mystery behind Mt. Baldy.

The park's offering ranger-led tours that take people on a safe route up to the dune, where they learn more about the research happening there and what it could mean for Mt. Baldy's future.

Geologists have spent months surveying the site and discovered at least eight holes beneath the dune.

They'll release an official report to the National Park Service later this year with their findings and recommendations.

It's unclear when Mt. Baldy could re-open completely.

But, when it does, many of the families who've been on the tours will think twice before running down the dune.

"People actually coming here, trampling on things changes how things develop," says Paul Puskorious, a Washington, D.C. resident who visited Mt. Baldy with his family.

Tours run through September 6.
