The CAFO moratorium in Bartholomew County expires Tuesday — meaning farmers are again allowed to apply under the original ordinance in place.
CAFOs, which stands for "Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations" became a hot topic in the area after the passage of two CAFOs in a short span of time last spring.
The ordinance currently says a CAFO must be at least a half a mile away from a residential zoned district. There are no current setbacks from a CAFO to a single home.
According to County Commissioner Richard Flohr many residents desire absolutely no CAFOs in the area.
"We want to do the best thing and the right for everyone in the county, but it's difficult to arrive in the middle," he says.
Commissioners are now in the process of shaping a new ordinance. It has to be approved at two public meetings before it can be finalized. Flohr expects that to take place sometime in November.
