Bill Could Affect Food Labeling

A bill in front of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce aims to provide consumers with an increase in clarity at the grocery store. It's called the Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2015.  If passed, lists of ingredients and health information would need to be updated on many products.

Among the food products that would have to change their labels are those containing  sesame, caffeine and added sugars.

Dennis Savianao is a nutrition policy professor at Purdue University. He gives an example of how this affects one of his favorite foods: orange marmalade.

Saviano says, "So, orange marmalade would have natural sugar from the orange in it and added sugar. So you would have to label both the total sugar and the added sugar according to this legislation."

This bill also includes a two-year timetable for defining how the words "natural" and "healthy" can be used in marketing
