This year marks 30 years for Bloomington's annual Canopy of Lights, where hundreds of lights brighten the city's downtown square.
CFC Properties has been involved in the celebration for 28 years and starts work on the project in August — and sometimes even July.
The organization maintains the lights on the trees, while the county takes care of the strands connecting from downtown buildings to the Monroe County Courthouse.
CFC President Jim Murphy says the original Canopy of Lights is beautiful, but he says the lights on the trees make it somewhat magical for the community.
"Tradition it is, yes. Many, many years ago, I would see these young kids come down with their parents and now I'm seeing those kids are grown and have young kids of their own. And they're bringing their kids to the canopy of lights and they do that every year," he says.
The festivities take place Nov. 27 starting at 6 p.m. where there will be music, hot chocolate and, of course, a lot of lights.
