Indiana Mother Requests Access To Cannabis Oil For Her Child

An Indiana mother is asking lawmakers for access to a controversial treatment for her son.

Shirley Nelson of Speedway testified Wednesday in favor of CBD oil, which is made from industrial cannabis. CDB oil is not currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Nelson's son Jonathan was born with cerebral palsy and experiences severe seizures, and she says other medications are damaging his organs.

"I am watching these drugs and these seizures rob my son," she says. "This is not the same little boy I had."

Nelson says she thinks CBD oil could offer him relief.

A representative for the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council is advocating for limited, "compassionate use" of CBD oil to treat childhood epilepsy while FDA trials are conducted.

The summer study committee could make recommendations to the full general assembly ahead of the legislative session.
