Indiana University Resumes Renovations On Franklin Hall

Construction crews have resumed renovations on Franklin Hall after work was stopped last month because of the presence of asbestos.

"We knew there was some asbestos in some of the window materials," says IU spokesperson Mark Land. "We found there was a higher-than-expected amount of asbestos, so we stopped construction."

The university brought in an asbestos abatement firm, which went through the entire building, cleaning and wiping every surface.

Land says the university tested afterward to ensure no asbestos was in the air or on building surfaces, and construction crews resumed work Aug. 17. The total cost of the asbestos abatement was approximately $45,000.

Land says there are no reports of workers being exposed to the asbestos and no reports of anyone suffering ill effects from the insulation.

The Franklin Hall renovation is still slated to be completed on schedule in June 2016.
