IU Begins Celebration Of Martin Luther King Jr With Speakers

Indiana University celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with several events focusing on the civil rights leader's impact and legacy.

The holiday started with a breakfast eventthat allowed the community to reflect on diversity. Students, faculty, and community members gathered on the campus of Indiana University for a leadership breakfast featuring several guest speakers, including Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton and IU President Michael McRobbie.

The keynote speaker for the event was journalist Soledad O'Brien

O'Brien spoke of Martin Luther King's legacy and described the literature he left behind as a "map." She pointed to the importance of addressing race and diversity all year.

"So, it can't be just this one day where we all say, ‘Kumbaya! Oh my gosh…a great man," and then let's forget about it. I think what's happened on college campuses this year has been a real indication of that," says O'Brien.

Following the breakfast, IU hosted a series of events that included service opportunities, a skill building workshop, and a discussion on civil rights and athletics.
