Update — Oct. 23, 1:40 p.m.
The former Indiana University student accused of attacking a Muslim woman outside a Bloomington cafe last week did not appear in court on Friday after he waived his right to an initial hearing.
Triceten Bickford, 19, is charged with battery against a public safety officer, strangulation, intimidation, battery resulting in bodily harm and battery by bodily waste. Some of his charges are felonies.
As we previously reported, police arrested Bickford after they say he yelled racial comments at the woman before attacking her at Sofra Cafe.
Witnesses told police Bickford could be heard yelling "white power" and "kill the police." Police say he approached the woman while she was sitting at a table outside with her 9-year-old daughter and started squeezing her neck and pushing her head toward the table. Police say Bickford tried to remove the woman's head scarf during the assault.
The FBI has opened a federal hate crime investigation into the alleged attack, and Bickford was expelled from IU "as a direct result" of the incident, an IU spokesperson said.
Bickford's next scheduled court appearance is Nov. 30.
