Mayor Ballard Vetoes Gun Regulation And Pay Raise Ordinances

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard vetoed two ordinances on Wednesday that would have affected gun owners and City-Council members.

Gun Regulation Veto

The Indianapolis City-Council passed an ordinace on December 14 that would have required gun owners to report missing or stolen guns to police within 48 hours. In a statement, Ballard calls this proposal, "contrary to state law," and vetoed the council's decision.

City-County Council Pay Raise Veto

Ballard vetoed raises for the City-County Council. He cited the timing as a reason for this veto. The proposal was offered as Ballard is leaving office, and Mayor-elect Joe Hogsett is preparing to take office. In a statement, Ballard referred to this time as "the political dark of night."

Hogsett will be sworn into office at noon on January 1.
