Morning Headlines: Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Good morning! Here are some of the stories we are following today.

1. Judge says Indiana can't enforce the ballot selfie law.

U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker ruled yesterday that Indiana can not enforce a law barring voters from taking a selfie or picture with their ballot.

The temporary injunction prevents the state from enforcing the law pending any further orders from the court.

2. Will Indiana pass its own hate crime law?

Indiana is one of only five states that do not have laws against hate crimes, but lawmakers are once again pushing for the state to change that.

Rep. Gregory Porter, D-Indianapolis, has been calling for a law to punish people who commit crimes based on biases for the last 15 years. While he has support from several agencies, it is unclear whether the issue will come up in the upcoming legislative session.

3. An Indiana museum wants to build a statue honoring a Hoosier poet.

The James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum is trying to raise money to build a statue of the poet.

The Associated Press reports that the statue will cost upwards of $40,000. Riley is one of Indiana's most famous poets, with works such as, "When the Frost is on the Punkin."
