A drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may significantly help patients with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
That's according to a new study involving the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Respondents in the study said the drug methylphenidate had an effect on their positive thinking and concentration.
The study's lead author, Dr. Thomas McAllister, says what was surprising was the significant improvement it had on PTSD symptoms, symptoms of depression, and post-concussive complaints.
"Anytime you see a robust kind of treatment response like this, especially one you weren't necessarily expecting, it causes you to think differently about what might be causing these diseases and symptoms," McAllister says.
McAllister says the search is on to find a funding agency interested in creating a new study to definitively test these findings.
