An estimated one in 10 U.S. workers may be missing work today because of the Super Bowl, according to a survey from the Workforce Institute at Kronos.
That amounts to about 16.5 million people, and over half of that number reported they requested the day off in advance.
"This annual day of mass absenteeism often spurs the tongue-in-cheek debate about making Super Bowl Monday a national holiday," said Joyce Maroney, Director of The Workforce Institute at Kronos in a statement. "One of the most promising pieces in this year's study is that the majority of those who plan to take Super Bowl Monday off are doing so in advance."
According to another survey from OfficeTeam at Robert Half, bosses expect this kind of behavior. OfficeTeam reports that 36 percent of managers think employees often call in sick the day after a big sporting event, like the Super Bowl.
