A conservative advocacy group is suing a city in Arizona over a public subsidy for an Indiana-based private university.
The Goldwater Institute filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Peoria, Arizona, on behalf of residents who say their local taxes should not go toward a privately-run institution.
Goldwater Executive Vice President Christina Sandefur argues Huntington University is getting $2.5 million in taxpayer money for its Peoria branch simply for being accredited and enrolling students.
The suit also alleges that the real-estate firm owning the campus will get funds for renovating a building for Huntington's use, and that the public won't get any benefit in return.
City spokeswoman Jennifer Stein says Peoria hasn't yet received the lawsuit, but that all of the city's economic development agreements are rigorously reviewed for compliance with all legal standards.
