Bicentennial Torch To Pass Through Monroe County Tuesday

In celebration of Indiana's Bicentennial, nominated Hoosiers are running a torch 2,300 miles, through all 92 counties of the state, and the torch heads to Monroe County Tuesday.

The torch will go through Elletsville first, then move to Bloomington.

Debbie Lemon is one of 23 Monroe County residents who will carry the Bicentennial Torch. Any Hoosier could nominate someone to be a torchbearer.

"I was kind of taken a back, but yeah it's a bucket list thing that you never think you should have in a bucket list, frankly," Lemon says.

The bicentennial committee selected torch bearers based on their excellent public service, achievement, or volunteer service.

Lemon is a Bloomington native and currently serves as secretary of the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

She says this once in a lifetime opportunity is one she feels proud to be included in.

"It just makes me very proud to be a Hoosier," Lemon says. "And I just think the state has done a remarkable job this entire year of the bicentennial to celebrate in so many different ways."

The torch doesn't have to be carried on foot. So far, its journey included a ride in a tractor, vintage car, and horse and buggy.

The torch will be in Brown County from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Monroe County from 3:00 p.m. to 7 p.m., ending with a celebration at the court house.
