Bloomington Plan Commission Considers Dunn St. BBC Development

The Bloomington Plan Commission is still considering Bloomington Bagel Company's proposal for a new development at its Dunn Street location.

The new mixed-use building would include 16 micro-studio apartments and a roof for residential use and private events. The Bloomington Plan Commission's primary concern is the height of the new building, which would be four stories tall.

BBC just celebrated its 20 th anniversary, but BBC Chief Operations Officer Dawn Keough says the current building is old and falling apart. A new oven wouldn't even fit in the building after an old one broke during Little 500 week.

"Twenty years is a long time," Keough says. "And it was older in the first place when we bought it, so we're going to start over. We decided we can fix ugly. It's the oldest, you know, ugliest building down the Kirkwood corridor, so we're going to fix that. We're going to build up which we're really excited about this possibility."

The Plan Commission was concerned with design mock-ups for the new building because the design might not match up with surrounding properties. However, Keough says pictures presented at the meeting were just initial designs.

"It'll be much more beautiful, much more welcoming, much more Bloomington. So that was just kind of a basic drawing. An idea of what we want to do, kind of size-wise and depth and scale," Keough says.

BBC moved out of its Dunn Street property into a temporary space next to Nick's English Hut while the company waits for the development to move forward. The Plan Commission will consider the development again at their next meeting in October.
