Bloomington Will Pay Firefighters $235K In Unpaid Overtime

The city of Bloomington owes its firefighters $235,000 in overtime payments.

City officials announced Monday Bloomington no longer meets conditions to use a method for calculating overtime called "the fluctuating workweek."

The city had been advised to use the method by the federal government several decades ago, but recently, eligibility has changed.

City Controller Jeff Underwood says the city has been working to adjust incorrect payments made over the past two years.

"When we realized that it went to a different calculation, we updated the spreadsheet that we use to calculate the overtime to be in compliance with this method," he says.

Officials say the issue came to light during a review.

Over the past two years, 112 firefighters received incorrect pay. Two were overpaid, but officials say they will not be required to repay the over-payment. The rest will receive compensation for incorrect overtime payments.
