A Bloomington sewage treatment plant reported an accidental chlorine release into Clear Creek On Wednesday.
City of Bloomington Utilities says the discharge was the result of an incorrect chlorine feed pump setting in the plant service water system. Chlorine is used in routine maintenance of waste water treatment equipment.
There are currently no visible impacts on the Clear Creek and an investigation into the cause of the discharge is in process.
Acting Director of Public Works, John Langley insists that it is a minor problem that will not cause damage to the creek or its inhabitants, but felt residents should know.
"Part of our duty is to tell the world when we do make a mistake, however minor it is," he says.
Langley says because the incident happened at a sewage treatment plant it will not affect the city's drinking water.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management was notified of the incident but no further action is expected.
