December Among Warmest On Record, Colder Temps Forecasted

The National Weather Service says December was the third warmest December on record in Indiana.

Meteorologist Jason Puma says the average temperature last month was 42-degrees. That is 11-degrees warmer than normal.

Puma says El Nino - warm water jet stream pattern - caused warmer temperatures, is waning somewhat.

"It was keeping most of those storm systems and colder temperatures well-bottled up in Canada," says Puma.

But Puma says the El Nino pattern is waning somewhat and Indiana is already beginning to experience colder temperatures as a result.

"We'll probably start seeing a little bit more typical January weather which we see in Indiana. That means an occasional strong cold front moves through and we get some of that cold arctic air intruding into the Ohio Valley."

He adds that the colder we get, the greater the likelihood for snow, although heavy snow is not in the current forecast.

"It's January. It's Indiana. We should expect snow from time to time," says Puma. "Not that we're going to get buried like we did a few years ago when we had 50 inches or something like that. We're not expecting anything like that, but in January in Indiana you can expect snow from time to time, it happens."
