Republican Control Of Indiana Senate Guaranteed

About a third of the legislators on November's ballot will be unopposed, including enough Republican state senators to guarantee the party's control of the chamber will continue.

Thursday was the last day for the parties to fill ballot vacancies left when no one filed for offices in the May primary. Democrats added four Senate candidates, but with five Republican candidates unopposed, there aren't enough contested races for Democrats to take control even if they won them all.

Republicans have held a Senate majority since 1978.

Democrats added 11 candidates to their House slate, including former Illinois State Rep Michael Boland, who ran for state treasurer two years ago. He'll try to unseat Fishers Representative Todd Huston. Republicans added one new candidate in Daleville Town Councilman Bill Walters, who will challenge Yorktown Representative Melanie Wright.

Twenty-five state representatives and nine senators are unopposed for reelection. Two more candidates are unopposed for open seats, and four House members face Libertarian opponents but no major-party challenger.

The unopposed candidates won't be completely assured of victory until July 15, the deadline for independent candidates to submit petitions to get on the ballot.
