Health Officials Encourage Precautions Against Mosquitoes

The Zika virus isn't likely to surface in Indiana, but you still need to take precautions against mosquitoes.

State Department of Health epidemiologist Bryan D. Price says there will probably be Zika cases in the United States from people who have traveled overseas. But there's no sign mosquitoes carrying the virus have made it to North America. One of the two Zika-carrying species isn't found in Indiana at all.

If Zika were to make an appearance in the United States, Price says it would be more likely along the Gulf of Mexico, where the mosquito species more commonly associated with the outbreak is found.

But even if Zika isn't a health threat in Indiana, mosquitoes still are.

West Nile virus first appeared in the state in 2002. Last year, it killed three Hoosiers and made 18 others sick.

Price says to remember to dump out standing water, and wear long sleeves or mosquito repellent if you go out.

The number of West Nile cases in Indiana has fluctuated wildly, with anywhere from four to eight cases a year after the first-year onslaught of nearly 300.
