Police in Jennings County say more arrests are coming after a wave of overdoses tied to heroin they believe is laced with fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin that's responsible for a recent surge in overdose deaths in some parts of the country.
Eighteen people overdosed Tuesday across two counties leaving one person dead.
Jennings County Sheriff Gary Driver says he suspects the heroin was from a "bad batch." They haven't confirmed through testing the heroin was laced fentanyl, but he says this development could change the way the department handles heroin overdoses.
"If it's the case that it's cut with fentanyl, it's kind of a new area for us, I think," he says.
Police used naloxone in every instance to revive those who overdosed.
