Indy Gets Federal Funds To Help Laid-Off Carrier Workers

The city of Indianapolis has gotten a $355,000 federal grant to help about 1,400 Carrier Corporation workers who are losing their jobs.

The Indiana Business Journal reports that the money is coming from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Agency. The heating and cooling manufacturer said in February that it would be moving its Indiana manufacturing operations to Mexico.

The grant money will be used to support Indianapolis economic initiatives and hire a recovery coordinator for the city.

The Indianapolis City-County Council has allocated matching funds for the federal grant.

Job losses are scheduled to begin next year and continue through 2019.
