Purdue University is banning faculty, staff and non-athletic students from gambling on sporting events involving Purdue teams, coaches or student athletes.
The new policy comes after some of the university’s faculty and athletic staff urged action after sports betting became legal in Indiana last month.
Indiana University spokesperson Chuck Carney says that unlike Purdue, IU has no policies on gambling.
“It’s something that right now we’re not working on changing but we’ll always of course look at what’s happening with the new laws coming into place at Indiana," Carney says.
NCAA rules already prohibit wagering by certain officials of a university, student-athletes, coaches and others.
Indiana is one of 17 states to have legalized sports betting.
