The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians held a news conference to mark the federal government placing nearly 166 acres of land in South Bend into trust for a tribal village and a casino that is expected to be the largest in Indiana.
Tribal Chairman John Warren said after the news conference Tuesday that he wouldn't comment on gaming plans, saying he wanted to focus on an Indian tribe having sovereign land in Indiana for the first time in 200 years. Plans call for building 44 housing units, which would include apartments.
Warren says ground will be broken Wednesday on the first phase that would include eight housing units that should be completed by June. He says 100 tribal members are waiting for homes.
