The University of Notre Dame has been selected to host the first presidential debate for the 2020 election.
University President Rev. John Jenkins made the announcement Friday morning after being elected to his fourth five-year term by the school’s board of trustees.
“I think our democracy so badly needs a place where we can have serious conversations," he says.
Julia Dodig, a junior at Notre Dame, is curious to see how the campus handles the debates.
“This campus is really polarized in terms of Democrat and Republican so it’ll be cool to see how it goes down,” she says.
The debate is scheduled for Sept. 29, 2020 at Purcell Pavilion. This is the first time that Notre Dame has ever hosted a presidential debate.
The University of Michigan and Belmont University in Nashville will host the other two presidential debates next year. Candidates for vice president will debate at the University of Utah.
