After an unseasonably warm start to the winter, Paoli Peaks opened some of its trails Monday afternoon.
Snow makers were able to work over the weekend and make enough powder to open beginner trails at the top, including the Cake Walk, Bunny Meadows and Bonk.
Conditions for making more snow appear to be ideal Monday night, so workers plan to fire up their snow guns after sunset.
"Once it reaches 20 degrees we can make about a foot of snow in 12 to 24 hours, depending on how long it stays 20 degrees," says Lauren Grenier, director of marketing and administration.
Grenier says opening about three weeks late in the season does impact the popular skiing destination's bottom line.
"It plays a part in our overall numbers," she says. "We have such a short season to begin with – usually it's mid-December to mid-March. You're talking maybe 90 days."
Paoli Peaks hopes to open more terrain later this week and recoup some of those costs. Daily hours and conditions are posted on their snow report.
