Purdue Suspends Third Fraternity In Past Two Academic Years

Purdue University and the national office of Sigma Phi Epsilon have jointly suspended the Purdue chapter for four years for violations of alcohol, hazing and unregistered functions.

Sigma Phi Epsilon was already on a four-year probation that began in 2013 related to incidents involving illegal drugs.

"The national office and chapter alumni leaders have been very involved in efforts to change the culture in this fraternity," said Jeffery Stefancic, associate dean of students in the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. "Continued violations led to this serious sanction."

The 14 current residents of the chapter house on Waldron Street will be permitted to live in the facility until the end of the current semester. The fraternity will be eligible to return to the house in the fall semester of 2020.

This is the third fraternity on Purdue's campus suspended since January 2015.

Sigma Nu was suspended in March, 2015 for violating rules involving alcohol and hazing. The Acacia fraternity was suspended after a student was accused of raping a student from another college at an unauthorized party in January.
