Road Funding To Be Distributed By End Of Summer

The road funding package signed into law by Governor Mike Pence will send more than $600 million to local communities.

The biggest chunk of local road money will be meted out the quickest – about $430 million from local tax reserves will be distributed to counties May 1. Counties then deliver cities and towns their portion by June 1.

The second biggest pot of money will come from a new matching grant account, funded by state reserve dollars. Those won't be available until at least July or August.

Senate fiscal leader Luke Kenley says to get the grants, locals have to show the state a plan for the money.

"It shows that they have a master plan of where they're going on their roads, so they could start planning to put that together right now," Kenley says.

House fiscal leader Tim Brown says part of that plan must involve regional economic development.

"So you have to look at your projects to look at what's going to be viable for economic development in your area," Brown says. "So start doing that analysis."

The final portion of road funding dollars comes from a shift in the state sales tax on gasoline, which won't begin until next year.
