Former Sen. Lugar Encourages Youth To Be Vocal In Politics

Former Senator Richard Lugar encouraged young people Thursday to be more vocal about political issues.

Lugar spoke at an IU School of Global and International Studies conference about Indiana's role in the world.

"This group in the room today really has to express individual opinions, each one of you, to your members of Congress, or to the President, or the Governor, or whoever else it is," Lugar says. "It's not a time for silence and grumbling. It's really a time to be articulate, to form your own thoughts, and to express them together here, but likewise to those in authority here and elsewhere."

The panel was lead by Provost Lauren Robel and included Lugar, former Congressman Lee Hamilton, U.S. Sen. Dan Coats and member of IU Board of Trustees James Morris.

Panel members stressed that Indiana will make a bigger impact on the world when young people act.

Other topics discussed ranged from humanitarian aid that Indiana can help America provide the world, to cyber security, to what they would tell the presidential nominees if they had the chance.
