A bill that reduces user fees for 2.1 million Hoosiers, described as a complete rewrite of the BMV code, passed unanimously through Senate committee Tuesday.
The words "streamline" and "simplify" came up a lot during the Senate committee hearing for House Bill 1087.
The legislation eliminates or reduces 163 user fees, cutting down what the BMV describes as an overly complex fee system.
"This fee chart has become somewhat infamous at this point, and I've often referred to it as controlled chaos," says Adam Krupp, General Counsel for Indiana's BMV.
One example of the bill's streamlining is how the Bureau registers trucks – right now there are 21 weight classes for trucks depending on a variety of factors. Under the new bill there are only 8.
