Sgt. Buckley Credits Slain Officer For Saving His Life

Sgt. Jordan Buckley credits a fallen comrade in the Howard County Sheriff's Department for saving his life.

"Deputy Koontz sacrificed his life beside me which is the reason I stand here today," Buckley said.

Officials say both Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz were shot Sunday when they  attempted to serve a warrant at a mobile home park in Russiaville.

Koontz died later that morning. Buckley walks with a limp after taking a bullet in the leg.

"Yesterday after being released from the hospital, I walked into my house to my wife and kids. And Carl will not be doing that," Buckley said. "I will be eternally grateful for his actions and every day when I put on the uniform I will wear it with pride for both of us."

The suspect is 25-year-old Evan Dorsey. Investigators say Dorsey shot Koontz and Buckley and then turned the gun on himself and died.

Deputy Koontz's funeral is set for March 29 at Northwest High School in Kokomo where he was a school resource officer.
