Tornado Drills Signal Start Of Tornado Season

The tornado sirens and other emergency notification systems will be triggered twice today as part of the statewide tornado drill. That includes IU-Notify alerts by text and e-mail.

The first drill will take place after 10 a.m. for schools and workplaces, then another after 7:30 p.m. for people at home. Emergency officials hope everyone will review emergency procedures in each place.

The drills are part of the National Weather Service to build a 'Weather Ready Nation' where Hoosiers are prepared for and respond to all dangerous weather hazards.

A report from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis indicates Indiana had a record 72 tornadoes in 2011. Last year, Indiana recorded 21 tornadoes. The last Indiana killer tornado was in Henryville in 2012.
