Vice President-elect Mike Pence has recalled his late father's modesty about his Korean War service during a Veterans Day speech in Indiana that included only brief mentions of Donald Trump's victory as president.
During remarks at the Indiana National Guard's Camp Atterbury, Pence didn't speak Friday about his new role as leader of Trump's transition team.
"And let me assure you," Pence said. "That our new President-elect and his new Vice President-elect are absolutely committed to reforming the veteran's affairs health administration so that we provide our veterans real time world class health care that they have earned and is their right for having served in uniform."
The Indiana governor told about 200 people that he and others who didn't serve in the military should be especially grateful to those like his father and his son, who became a Marine Corps officer last year.
