Weather UPDATES: Damaging Winds Expected This Afternoon

Noon UPDATE

Officials at the National Weather Service have rated a 'moderate risk' for severe weather across much of central Indiana due to damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain. Officials have noted today as an 'active weather day' mainly this afternoon and evening with the main threat after 7 p.m.

Forecasters say the storms will trigger due to a warm front colliding with a vigorous upper level weather disturbance.

Power companies are bracing for severe weather over northern Indiana.

The Associated Press reports that Northern Indiana Public Service Co. is increasing staffing at its customer call center, scheduling extra work crews, postponing scheduled work that would require equipment to be out of service, and putting work crews in the field to respond more quickly to problems.

Thunderstorms are expected to end Thursday night and clear out through Saturday.

Weather status by county as well as delays and closings being reported to WFIU and WTIU News may be found here.
