Runners competing in marathon and half marathon races last weekend in South Bend ran a little further than they intended.
Beacon Health System spokeswoman Heidi Prescott says the runners ran about 0.38 of a mile too long between miles 10 and 11. She says the error occurred because of miscommunication between the race organizers and the group certifying the race distance.
The mistake affected about 1,700 registered participants in the Sunburst races Saturday. Participants learned of the discrepancy when their personal GPS units indicated that the distances they had run when they crossed the finish line were longer than the 13.1-mile distance for a half marathon and 26.2 miles for the full marathon.
